Review: Divergent by Veronica Roth

“One Choice Decides Your Friends. One Choice Defines Your Beliefs. One Choice Determines Your Loyalties-Forever. One Choice Can Transform You.”

Divergent by Veronica Roth is more than just another dystopian thriller. It contains  romance, secrets, betrayals, and sometimes shocking consequences.  We first meet Beatrice as she is coming upon her sixteenth birthday, when she must chose the faction she is to belong to for the rest of her life. This includes the decision to leave her family and all that she knows behind or chose to be who she really is.

Beatrice’s world is split into five distinct factions: Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the peaceful), Erudite (the intelligent), and Dauntless (the brave). During the initiation into her faction, Beatrice renames herself Tris, and fights to discover who she really is and who her true friends are. She also encounters a boy, infuriating at times, fascinating to her at others.  And Tris carries the biggest secret of all….one that could destroy her and lead to the unravel of her seemingly perfect society.

This story is more than a journey to discovering oneself. Tris feels shame and guilt at being discontent in this perfect world of peace that she was supposedly raised in.  There is almost a disconnect between Tris and the world as she knows it. It is as if her eyes are wide open, yet shut at the same time.  We see her  grow emotionally and her identity begin to emerge on her journey.  There are horrific and heartbreaking moments for Tris, but they are countered by friendships and an unexpected romance with fellow faction member Four. Fair warning, you will fall for him and become a Four Whore.

Candor, Abnegation, Amity, Erudite, Dauntless …..WHAT WILL YOU CHOSE???

The second book of the series Insurgent releases May 1, 2012.
