Rose Garcia, author of Final Life and The Transhuman Chronicles, answers the question, “What is transhumanism?”
Sir Julian Huxley is a prominent English biologist, philosopher, educator, and author. He was the first professor of biology at Rice University. If you’ve read Final Life, you’ll see that Julian Huxley and Rice University are weaved into my story, as it is Sir Huxley who coined the term Transhumanism in his book New Bottles for New Wine.
Sir Huxley writes, “The human species can, it if wishes, transcend itself—not just sporadically, an individual here in one way, an individual there in another way, but in its entirety, as humanity. We need a name for this new belief. Perhaps Transhumanism will serve: man remaining man, but transcending himself, by realizing new possibilities of and for his human nature.”
When I read this, I was blown away. And then I thought, what if he’s right and mankind can do more with their ‘human nature’? And what if something like this is already happening? What if there’s a secret society of “real” super humans out there and we just don’t know about it?
My brain kicked into overdrive and I took these concepts, weaved them into my imagination, and created The Transhuman Chronicles, with Final Life being the first installment. In Final Life, Transhumans exist but have split into two groups that I call the Pure and the Tainted. The Pure stand alongside ordinary humans, while the Tainted seek to eradicate them. Eventually, they decide to battle for the life of one person. This battle is the story of Final Life.

About the Rose Garcia
Rose Garcia is a lawyer turned writer who’s always been fascinated by science fiction and fantasy. From a very young age, she often had her nose buried in books about otherworlds, fantastical creatures, and life and death situations. More recently, she’s been intrigued by a blend of science fiction and reality, and the idea that some supernatural events are, indeed, very real. Fueled by her imagination, she created The Transhuman Chronicles—a series of books about people who have overcome human limitations. The first in this series is Final Life. Between juggling family life with her husband and two kids, Rose is working on the companion to Final Life. So stay tuned!
