Black City, the debut novel from author Elizabeth Richards, is the latest YA novel to be acquired by a movie studio. According to Deadline Hollywood, the studio, in this case it’s Screen Gems, signed the deal quickly since there is so much buzz on this highly anticipated novel, which doesn’t release until November 13th. Screen Gems is currently looking for a screenwriter, so they can begin developing the script.
Of course, having a novel optioned doesn’t mean that a movie will actually be made. Just look at Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead. The book was optioned by Preger Entertainment in 2010 and just last month the producers intimated that they may finally have a script on the Official Vampire Academy Movie Facebook page, but no studio, cast, or crew members have become attached to the project as of yet. Of course, the studio also needs to be able to fund the project in addition to staffing it.
