Claudia Gray is finally revealing some new info about the first book in her upcoming trilogy, Spellcaster. In two recent blog posts (Part 1 Part 2), she answered a lot of fan questions and revealed a bit about what to expect.
Spellcaster takes place in a small town named Captive’s Sound. There are female witches in this world, and their secret is zealously guarded from the men. Mothers teach their daughters who have been born with the gift how to use their powers in secret. How powerful a witch becomes is based solely on her: how hard she works in training and her life experiences. Claudia likens being a witch in the Spellcaster world to being an Olympic gold medalist.
The series was inspired by Claudia’s short story, “I Don’t Like Your Girlfriend” in the anthology Vacations from Hell. Spellcaster takes place in that same world, but none of the characters are the same and the series is not quite as funny as the short.
There are three main characters: Nadia Caldani, Mateo Perez, and Verlaine Laughton. Nadia is a young witch smarting over her mother’s absence and its aftermath, like no one to teach her how to use her powers, more responsibility, and a move to a small town. Mateo is Captive’s Sound’s resident outcast. His family members have a habit of committing suicide, and when he begins to dream of the future, he knows the family curse will claim him soon. But not before there’s a little romance with Nadia.
Verlaine is such an outcast that other outcasts, like Mateo, won’t have anything to do with her. But, she may be the one person Nadia can trust if for no other reason than having no one to tell. All three characters are the focus of the series–according to Claudia, “this comes much closer to being an ensemble piece than anything else I’ve written to date.” Even the romance is spread out evenly since Verlaine will eventually get a love interest too (and it’s not Mateo–noooo love triangles for these three).
Why will we love them? According to Claudia:
I think anybody who’s had to deal with way too much, way too soon in life, and sometimes feels like the pressure is too much, will relate to Nadia. I think anybody who has felt judged, like they need to break free of what people think about them and just be who they are, will sympathize with Mateo. And I think anybody who’s dealt with enduring loneliness will understand Verlaine.
But what Claudia is really loving is the villain, who is a lot of fun to write.
The second book in the trilogy is Steadfast and is being written as we speak. Spellcaster will release on March 5, 2013.
In case you haven’t read it, here’s the book blurb:
When Nadia’s family moves to Captive’s Sound, she instantly realizes there’s more to it than meets the eye. Descended from witches, Nadia senses a dark and powerful magic at work in her new town. Mateo has lived in Captive’s Sound his entire life, trying to dodge the local legend that his family is cursed – and that curse will cause him to believe he’s seeing the future … until it drives him mad. When the strange dreams Mateo has been having of rescuing a beautiful girl—Nadia—from a car accident come true, he knows he’s doomed.
Despite the forces pulling them apart, Nadia and Mateo must work together to break the chains of his family’s terrible curse, and to prevent a disaster that threatens the lives of everyone around them. Shimmering with magic and mystery, New York Times bestselling author Claudia Gray’s new novel is sure to draw fans of the Hex Hall and Caster Chronicles series, and fans of the hit CW TV show The Secret Circle.
