If you enjoyed the writing behind Toy Story 3 and Little Miss Sunshine, you will be pleased to know that its writer, Michael Arndt, will write the screenplay for Star Wars: Episode 7. Lucasfilm posted the following announcement on the Star Wars website:
As pre-production of Star Wars: Episode VII begins, Lucasfilm has confirmed that award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay for the new Star Wars film. As revealed in the ongoing video series posted here on StarWars.com, Kathleen Kennedy and George Lucas have begun story conferences with Arndt. Arndt won an Academy Award® for Best Original Screenplay for writing Little Miss Sunshine (2006), and was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for writing Toy Story 3 (2010).
According to Deadline, Arndt has actually been working with Lucasfilm for the past few months and created a treatment to cover the next three films. The Star Wars saga was originally conceived as 12 films broken into 4 trilogies. It will be interesting to see if Lucasfilm (now under the control of Disney) will continue with the story line George Lucas created or if they will use completely fresh material. I would love to see the stories of Luke, Han, and Leia continue, unless we get something the quality of Episode 1.
Either way, we will see Episode 7 in 2015 with the next two coming every 2-3 years after that.
I’m assuming the next big announcement we’ll hear is who will direct at least Episode 7 if not all three films. Like everyone else, I’m really waiting for the plot announcements. According to Entertainment Weekly, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford are all “open” to returning to the series, so as for right now, that’s what I want to confirmed or shot down.
