Cassandra Clare Teams up to Write ‘The Bane Chronicles’

Magnus Bane is certainly one of the most intriguing characters in Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunters stories. And I’m not the only one to think so; Sarah Rees Brennan and Maureen Johnson are co-authoring Clare’s latest spin-off, The Bane Chronicles, with her.

According to Publisher’s Weekly, taking on 2 writing partners is not the only aspect of The Bane Chronicles that sets it apart from Clare’s other series. Comprised of 10 stories that range from 8,000 to 10,000 words, The Bane Chronicles will be originally released as ebooks and compiled into a print edition at some point after all of the digital stories have been released (a date has not been set yet). Clare will write 1 or 2 of the stories with Brennan and Johnson authoring the rest. The stories can be read as stand-alones or all together. Episodic tv series were used as the model for this project, so just as you could watch one episode of How I Met Your Mother or you could keep up with the whole series, The Bane Chronicles can be read the same way.

The first story will release in February 2013 for $2.99 with new releases continuing through City of Bones‘ release at the end of the summer. The compilation book with the entire series will most likely release in 2014.

While little has been said regarding the plot of the stories, Brennan did let a couple of little details slip during a Twitter chat over the weekend, like Camille and Alec will definitely make appearances. However, don’t expect them to be his only romances since Brennan teased, “Magnus has had many romances over the centuries…Maureen Johnson came up with a very EXCITING one.” She also revealed that “The different stories will be about different points in his life, yes–Peru, Alec, Camille, France, NYC in different decades…” And, we may also catch up with some Infernal Device characters, such as the Herondales, as well.
