D: Doritos Flavored Popcorn

Snacking is my dietary downfall. I eat pretty healthy meals, but I love a good snack (or 2) before bed each night. Topping the list are Doritos and popcorn. Popcorn is the obviously healthier option, so I decided to try to emulate the flavor of the Doritos and hopefully have a healthier snack.

My journey for healthier Doritos has been a long one filled with trial and error, but here is where I am in the process. The result is popcorn that is close to the taste of cheese Doritos, but without the crazy orange color and a little less nacho cheesy tasting.

Doritos Popcorn


1/2 cup unpopped corn kernals

2 Tbsp butter, melted

1/4 cup nutritional yeast

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp paprika

1 tsp cumin

1 tsp chili powder

1/8 tsp cayenne powder

2 tsp salt


  1. Pop the popcorn in an air popper. (If popping in oil, do not use the butter.)
  2. While the corn pops, mix all of the spices and salt. Then run them through the blender to make a fine powder.
  3. Pour the melted butter over the popcorn and mix it to coat.
  4. Shake the spice mix over the popcorn and mix to coat.
