This past weekend I spent the day with the Eastern Pennsylvania region of the Jane Austen Society of North America for their Jane Austen Day celebration, The Power of Persuasion.
The day began with a continental breakfast and the drawing of a door prize, which I won! I never win anything so I was pretty pumped about the Jane Austen beach towel and event bag that I won. Then Lynn Festa spoke about “Finding Comfort in Persuasion” until she was followed by Whit Stillman and Juliette Wells, who had a delightful conversation on the Persuasion movies called “Not Persuaded: Critiquing and Creating Screen Adaptations of Austen’s Work.” During the three-course lunch, guests were able to visit the emporium to purchase Jane Austen-related merchandise and books, including books by all of the speakers. The day was rounded out by “Sir Walter Elliot: The Constant Reader” with Susannah Fullerton. A book signing with the speakers concluded the event.
All-in-all, it was a fantastic day. I sat with a wonderful group of women who are equally, if not more, excited about one of my favorite authors. A lot of attention was paid to small details, such as the folders and bookmarks for each attendee. The sophisticated elegance of the Merion Cricket Club was the perfect setting for the day. And, did I mention I won something?!
